Types of Long Term Care Facilities

Adult Care Facilities
Adult Group Home: provides accommodations for 6 to 16 and supervision and personal care services to at least 3 residents.

Adult Family Home: provides accommodations for 3 to 5 adults and supervision and personal care services to at least 3 residents.

Adult Foster Home: provides accommodations and supervision for 1 or 2 adults.

Residential Care Facilities
Provide accommodations to 17 or more adults and supervision and personal care services to at least 3 residents or provides accommodations to 3 or more adults and skilled nursing care to 1 or more individuals.

Assisted Living
Market term for residential care facility or unlicensed facility. Provides housing and personalized supportive services. May be called congregate living, personal care homes, catered living, retirement homes or community residences.

Community-Based Services
Services for older persons who need some help with personal health needs while living at home. Examples include respite services, adult day care, home health services and senior centers.

Nursing Homes
Licensed facilities. Provide personal care services, 24-hour supervision, medications, skilled nursing or rehabilitation for individuals who require care due to illness or impairment.
