HOW YOU CAN HELP
Volunteer Services
Volunteers trained as ombudsmen are an essential part of LTCO services. Volunteers usually work 2 or more hours per month visiting people in long term care facilities to monitor the quality of their care and their life. They also maintain regular contact with those individuals to represent their interests, and help the facility staff resolve the individual's concerns and complaints. Volunteers also educate people about their rights and serve as their link to the community.

Volunteer Training
Volunteer ombudsmen must complete 14 hours of initial training, and continue to get 6 hours of continuing education annually. Volunteers work closely under supervision from a staff ombudsman. They are assigned to specific facilities in their communities. There are quarterly meetings held in different parts of the LTCO service area with other volunteers for training and networking. Volunteers complete monthly reports on their activities.

Community & Office Volunteers
Some volunteers prefer to work in the LTCO office, helping with filing, reports, and fundraising. Others help by representing LTCO at many community events and health fairs, talking about our services and sharing their experiences and understanding of ombudsman services.

Speakers Bureau
Volunteers and staff serve on LTCO’s Speaker’s Bureau. Ombudsman services have been described as one of the community’s “best kept secrets.” We want to change that, so we are trying to speak to as many community organizations and groups as possible. If your group would like a speaker on LTCO, or information about long term care, please contact us.
